My Learning Object

What is a learning object? A learning object is a resource that can be used to assist in learning. For example: Twitter can be used as a learning object because it can be used in schools as a way for students to practice summarizing but also share what they have learned in class. Having students create their own learning objects is a great way to assess a student's knowledge because students have to both learn how to use the technology they are using to create the learning object as well as learn how to represent their information in it. For this class I used the learning object Storybird.

What is Storybird? Storybird is a free storybook making website which allows for it's users to make a digital storybook, publish it, and even purchase it as a hard copy. It is a fun and interactive tool however as I have already mentioned, you do need to sign up before you can use it. A limitation of Storybird is that users cannot upload their own photos but are required to use photos from the Storybird database.

Where can it be used in school? Personally, I think that Storybird would be best suited for grade 2-6 because of the simplicity of it and its photo databases. With that being said, I see that it could be used as a way for students to express their knowledge of flight (which I have modeled) or any other topic in Science into a story. As well, this same process addresses the writing component of Language in which students need to be able to make published work according to expectations and this site has the ability to publish their work which addresses this specific expectation.

I have uploaded a storybook I made on Storybird called: "3... 2... 1... Take off: A Story About Flight" which focuses on the aspects of flight.

Enjoy!

Mr. Jeffrey
